President’s Message
Everything’s
hopping here at NCMTA headquarters! We’re in the midst of writing a new
constitution, applying for tax-exempt status independent of our
affiliates, driving for membership renewals, preparing for the upcoming
events and, to top that, having babies!
Congratulations to
Janine Ferranti, our membership chairperson, and Michele Walker, our
historian, on the births of their sons; we’re hoping that someday they
will be added to the cadre of outstanding math teachers who make up our
membership.
When NCMTA was
started in 1948, the founding members formulated a constitution that
served us well until the executive committee decided to apply for its
own tax-exempt status. The “legalese” of the application prompted a new
look at our purpose and responsibilities, commensurate with the times.
Terms for the adoption of the new constitution include displaying it to
the membership, in writing, at least one month before the vote for its
acceptance. Unfortunately, the size of the document precludes printing
it in a newsletter, but the internet (more specifically, our webmaster,
Sal Scire) has come to the rescue. The entire constitution will be
posted on the website as of February 1st; I encourage you to
visit again to review it. Your comments are welcome at
mmansfield@cps.k12.ny.us
. The date for the vote has not been set yet, but that too will be
posted on the website.
Now, for the
membership drive, I’m asking each of you to ask one
colleague to join NCMTA. Applications can be downloaded from the
website; teachers will also find here a list of the benefits of
membership as well as a description of the programs we sponsor. Our
membership committee will email you a receipt for the dues collected.
Good programs are increasingly more expensive to run; know that every
dollar generated from dues is used to make our programs better.
Finally, I want to
encourage your attendance at one or more of the upcoming programs on our
calendar. The Limacon Conference for math teachers (k-college) is
scheduled for March 28th, the Math Tourney for grades 4-6 on April 4th,
Family Math Day on April 5th, the Spring dinner honoring our teachers of
the year, the winner of the Math Fair and outstanding college math-ed
students on May 15th, and the Student Symposium for grades 5-8 on May
30th.
Thanks to you all
for your ongoing support.
